Power BI for factories: OEE, downtime and scrap

OEE measures how much of a machine’s time turns into good parts: availability × performance × quality. With Power BI you see it every morning by machine, line and shift, next to the downtime and scrap that pull it down, without building the Excel by hand.

What’s included

OEE by machine and line

Availability, performance and quality separately, so you know which of the three is costing you.

Downtime by cause

Minor and major stops by day, machine and reason, with the mean time between stops.

Scrap and its cost

Rejected parts by defect and work centre, and what they cost, against plan.

Shop-floor data

From the ERP, the MES or the machines themselves (OPC UA, Modbus, Siemens S7…) in read-only mode, without opening ports in the factory.

Written definitions

What counts as a stop, a bad part or planned time, agreed with the plant manager.

Power BI, DAX, Power Query, Microsoft Fabric, SQL Server, OPC UA, Modbus, MQTT

Analysis packs for the plant

Reports already designed for production, adapted to your machines and your own names. Try them with made-up data in the lab.

For the plant manager

Manufacturing and OEE

Where do the machines lose time, and why?

  • OEE with availability, performance and quality, by machine and line
  • Minor and major stoppages by day, cause and machine, with mean time between stoppages
  • Hours lost by product

For logistics and customer service

Orders and deliveries

How many orders arrive on time, and why are the others late?

  • On-time % by week, warehouse and carrier
  • Delays by reason and by customer
  • Open orders with their status

For quality and production

Quality and scrap

How many parts do we scrap, what does it cost and why?

  • Scrap % by month and work centre
  • Rejected parts by defect and cost of scrap
  • Actual against expected by part number, and the orders with most scrap

How we work

  1. Free review45 minutes on a video call to look at your data, your tasks and what really takes up your time.
  2. Written proposalWhat gets built, how many rounds of changes, the fixed price and the deadline, set once I have seen the data.
  3. BuildI show you progress along the way. You pay 50% to start and 50% on delivery, always with an invoice.
  4. Delivery and trainingI leave it working, documented and explained to your team. If you like, I carry on with monthly maintenance.

Why work with me?

What changes compared with hiring an agency or off-the-shelf software

  1. You talk to the person who builds itWhoever listens to you in the review is who designs, codes and delivers the work. No sales reps, no middlemen.
  2. I know how a company works day to dayI have worked with data since 2019, first in consulting and now inside industry, with ERPs such as A3, SAP or Clavei.
  3. A fixed price, in writingBefore we start you know what gets built, how many rounds of changes there are and what it costs. No surprises at the end.
  4. Your data, looked afterI work read-only whenever possible and the applications live on EU servers with nightly backups.
  5. No lock-inI hand the work over documented, and much of what I do is open source: you can see how I work before you call me.
  6. I measure what you gainI note how long the task takes today and how long afterwards, so you know whether it was worth it.

Frequently asked questions

What is OEE and how is it calculated?
OEE (overall equipment effectiveness) is availability × performance × quality. If a machine was stopped for 10% of planned time, ran at 90% of its ideal speed and 95% of its parts were good, its OEE is 0.9 × 0.9 × 0.95 = 77%.
Do I need a MES or new sensors?
Not always. You can start with what the ERP or the production reports already record. If you want live machine data, it is read from the PLC or SCADA in read-only mode.
Does it work for small factories?
Yes. It is designed for manufacturing SMEs with a few lines, where OEE is often worked out by hand in Excel once a month.
How much does it cost?
It depends on the machines, where the data comes from and how many packs you want. Tell me about your plant and I’ll send you a fixed written quote, with no obligation.
